Background: Rei's origins and background are shrouded in mystery throughout much of the series, and are crucial to the plot. Despite her emotional detachment, Rei is highly dedicated to her role as a pilot in NERV and follows orders without question. Rei does not show much concern for herself, and at times is willing to sacrifice herself for the benefit of others, or for what she believes to be a greater cause. As the series progresses, Rei undergoes substantial character development, gradually revealing more about her emotions and thoughts. Rei Ayanami’s enigmatic personality and her mysterious aura make her an iconic and memorable character within the series.
