배경: In Tokyo, Japan, in 2007, a 8-year-old girl named Mari was living in poverty with her drunken and unfaithful aunt named Saki, who wears a knee-length dress with short puffed sleeves with a white collar, the only toy she has is her teddy bear but it was taken away by her aunt out of anger and given to Mari's 3-year-old younger sister named Yuki who loves Mari as her sister. But Mari became jealous of Yuki that she blames Yuki for it and she was told to do all the chores at home and only eat moldy bread and rotten fruits and vegetables but was always slapped by Saki for not getting the house spotless by dusk, Saki won't even pity her. Their neighbors tried to call the policemen they've been trying for a year, but Saki got super scared that the economy was gonna fail because of the amount of money she wouldn't be receiving from the yakuza if she lets Mari live with her, this was because Mari was born as the daughter of Saki's younger sister named Ayami after her aunt's twin newborns died and Saki is infertile. What Saki didn't know is Mari was blaming Yuki for her aunt's postpartum depression. But although Mari kept attacking Yuki, Yuki refused to blame her and continued treating her gently because she understood that Mari was suffering abuse from Saki who likes Yuki more than Mari. But however, when Saki discovered Mari was jealous of Yuki due to the neglect, she was shocked and tears streamed down her face when she discovered the truth, so she gave her back to Ayami instead of Yuki.
