Born hideously deformed, he is a "subject of horror" for his family and as a result, he runs away as a young boy and falls in with a band of Gypsies, making his living as an attraction in freak shows, where he is known as "le mort vivant" ("the living dead").The Phantom is born as Asch in Boscherville, a small town not far from Rouen, in the summer of 1831. His spoiled, vain mother scorns her deformed child from birth, puts a mask on his face, and cannot bring herself to name him. Instead, she instructs the elderly priest who baptises him to name the child after himself.Asch mentions having worn a mask even as a child, because his mother couldn't bear to look at his skull-like face.The Shah, pleased with Asch's work and determined that no one else should have such a palace, orders Asch blinded. Thinking that Asch could still make another palace even without his eyesight, the Shah orders Asch's execution. It is only by the intervention of the daroga (the Persian) that Asch escapes.
